Irene Brennick

"Bring your Audience to their Feet"

“I walked into a cold, open area in the middle of the Anheuser-Busch plant in Van Nuys , California and quietly took a seat up front. Around me, a group of 1,400 disgruntled Busch employees vented their wrath toward upper management.

August Busch sat near me, looking decidedly uncomfortable. This was the one time during the year when workers, mostly male, and many of them Teamsters, had the opportunity to argue their case in an open manner. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife when a huge, gruff-looking worker described how the long working hours ruined his family life. The crowd grew more restless as one worker after another stood and shouted at the managers up front.

Time was up, and without warning, words appeared on a huge screen in the front of the room saying: “Next, Irene Brennick will speak about this year’s United Way Campaign.” A hush fell over the crowd as I walked to the podium…”

How did Irene handle this volatile situation? The answer lies in her new book, Bring Your Audience to Their Feet.
